Want to know the Difference Between Likes and Follows on Facebook?

Facebook offers two ways to connect with individuals and businesses: either with a LIKE or a FOLLOW. This blog post explains the difference between the two.

Whether to like or follow a page depends on how much you want to interact with a page.

The LIKE and FOLLOW options are located under the Page Cover:

LIKE A PAGE

When you choose to LIKE a page, you are automatically defaulted to also follow that page. Which means that posts from that page will start to appear in your newsfeed. These posts will be sorted randomly by the algorithm dependent on how much you interact with the page. It also means that you will appear on the ‘friends’ list for that page.

FOLLOW A PAGE

Choosing to FOLLOW a page results in you seeing that page’s posts in your newsfeed (as above) but you won’t appear in the page’s friends list.

LIKE BUT NOT FOLLOWING (UNFOLLOW THIS PAGE)

This option means that you show up on the friends list of the page you liked, but you will not see any of the posts from the page in your newsfeed. The owner of the page doesn’t know that you aren’t seeing their posts! You can figure out yourself why you would use this option!

FOLLOW – SEE FIRST

This option ensures that you will see a post from the page at the top of your newsfeed. This option bypasses the Facebook Algorithm and ensures the content is prioritized. You can ‘see first’ several pages, all of which will appear at the top of your newsfeed.

LIKE AND FOLLOW – SEE FIRST

This is the optimum setting. You appear in the page friend list and you get the posts at the top of your newsfeed.

As a page owner, this is your most valuable customer!

CONCLUSION

Your likes and follows should be about equal in number. However should your likes be significantly less than your follows, perhaps it’s time to reconsider your Facebook strategy. Posting content that is relevant to your audience, that solves their problems, helps them to do things better or easier and educates them will ensure that they stay engaged.
